Preds prospect Geoffrion wins Hobey Baker Award…

The Wisconsin Badgers have had an exciting week.

First they blasted RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) 8-1 on Thursday to advance to the National Championship game and then their captain, Nashville Predators prospect Blake Geoffrion, was named the 2010 Hobey Baker Award winner on Friday.

It’s no secret what they hope Saturday has in store.

The Hobey Baker is the Heisman Trophy of collegiate hockey and this is the University of Wisconsin’s first in the 30-year history of the award.

Geoffrion beat out University of New Hamphire’s Bobby Butler and University of Maine’s Gustav Nyquist. Butler signed with the Ottawa Senators a couple weeks ago and has already played in two NHL games. Nyquist is a sophomore for the Black Bears and appears poised to make another run at the Hobey next season.

Butler led the nation in goals (29) and was tied for second in total points (53). Nyquist led all NCAA skaters with an amazing 42 assists and 61 points in 39 games.

Geoffrion, one of Wisconsin’s three team captains, didn’t lack in the scoring column either. His 27 goals in 38 games was good for second nation wide. And that was before he bagged one in the semifinal game against RIT on Friday night.

Being a senior at “Wisco,” Geoffrion is soon expected to join the Predators’ minor league affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals.
