ADMIRALS UPDATE: Milwaukee suffers first loss of season

BELOW IS THE PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MILWAUKEE ADMIRALS. For full Admirals coverage, follow our good friends @adsroundtable on Twitter.

Abbotsford, BC – Ben Walter and Greg Nemisz scored in a shootout to lead the Abbotsford Heat past the Milwaukee Admirals Friday in Abbotsford, B.C., 2-1.

The shootout loss was the first blemish on the 2011-2012 Admirals record, but the point moves them into sole possession of first place in the Midwest Division (3-0-0-1, 7 points). The Admirals also extended its streak of road games without a regulation loss to 19.

Milwaukee’s lone scorer in the shootout was Juuso Puustinen.

Abbotsford’s offensive pressure had the Admirals chasing the puck early in the game. The Heat struck first when defenseman T.J. Brodie’s shot from the point found its way through traffic and over the right shoulder of Milwaukee netminder Jeremy Smith at 6:21 of the first period.

Admirals forward Ryan Thang tied the game at 6:34 of the second period with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot over the right shoulder of Heat goalie Leland Irving. On the continuation, Thang was slammed into the endwall by Heat forward Paul Byron. Thang did skate off the ice under his own power but did not return to the game. Byron received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. However, the Admirals could not convert on the power play, which was a 5-on-3 advantage for two minutes when Brendan Mikkelson was sent to the Heat penalty box at 7:52.

The Admirals and Heat finish their two-game set on Saturday night. Milwaukee’s next home game is Saturday, October 29th at 7:00 pm against Grand Rapids with a free post-game concert from country music star Craig Morgan.
