News & Notes: Leipsic and Winterhawks advance, Ads and Cyclones lose

There were quite a few news and notes around the Nashville Predators’ organization on Friday.

LEIPSIC LEADS WINTERHAWKS TO WHL FINALS
When the Preds took him in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, they never could have imagined that Brendan Leipsic would go onto become the leading scorer in all of Canadian Major Junior the following season (120 points in 68 games). If that wasn’t impressive enough, he is now a part of Winterhawks history. All four of his seasons in Portland, he has played for the Ed Chynoweth Cup (the WHL Championship).

On the strength of two goals (and 17 penalty minutes) by Leipsic, the Winterhawks advanced to their fourth consecutive WHL Final by beating the Kelowna Rockets, 7-3, in game five of their series on Friday. Portland has lost just two games through three rounds and looks well on their way to, once again, representing the WHL at the 2014 Memorial Cup in May.

Leipsic has registered at least one point in all 14 games this post season.

ADS DROP GAME ONE
The Milwaukee Admirals dropped the puck on their opening Calder Cup Playoff series with a 6-2 loss to the Toronto Marlies. The Ads pulled within two thanks to a Filip Forsberg power play marker in the third period but it was too little, too late. The Marlies got a pair of empty netters at the end of the tilt to take game one of their best-of-5 series. Game two is tonight and you can listen to Aaron Sims via the 1250 WSSP webstream HERE starting at 7:00pm Central.

CYCLONES TRY TO ADVANCE TONIGHT
Nashville’s ECHL affiliate, the Cincinnati Cyclones, are also trying to win a championship. They’re up three games to one in their opening round series against the Orlando Solar Bears. Preds prospects Magnus Hellberg (2nd rd, 2011), Josh Shalla (4th rd, 2011), Taylor Aronson (3rd rd, 2010) and Zach Budish (2nd rd, 2009) are among those trying to bring the Kelly Cup back to Cincinnati. Puck drops at 6:30pm Central.
