Pickard wants the back-up gig; he’s got his new mask…

Our good friends over at InGoal Magazine have just posted pictures of prospect Chet Pickard‘s new Nashville Predators goalie mask.

There are two other pictures of the mask here so don’t forget to go check them out.

Pickard will be battling with Anders Lindback, Jeremy Smith and Mark Dekanich for the opporutnity to back up Pekka Rinne this season. And, considering the fierce competition, I wonder if this is Pickard’s way of saying “put me in coach, I’m ready to play.”

Training camp starts in two weeks.

Man, Daveart does great work, doesn’t he?

Nice – although the right side picture looks more like a wolf to me ….

That’s definitely a wolf on the other side of the mask, but I don’t really see it as an issue(looks pretty awesome in my opinion). Other goalie masks across the NHL have had skulls, ghouls, demons, and other random art that has absolutely nothing to do with the team. It’s more of a personal preference for each goalie.

Example: Marty Turco’s goalie masks have always had demonic looking gargoyles, which have nothing to do with the Dallas Stars or Chicago Blackhawks.

I meant to say this in my last post, but I believe that Pickard should definitely be given a shot at the #2 spot in Nashville. He’s only 20 years old, but I feel he is more than ready to take over an NHL back-up role. With the awesome year that Rinne had last season, he will likely be starting 50-60 games in 2010-2011 as long as he stay healthy. That leaves Pickard with 20-25 starts, which is a good number for him to adjust the speed of the NHL, and also enough to allow him to shine if he plays to his potential.
